Welcome
Welcome to the MLC 2011 website! This November we will present the UK's second annual Media Literacy Conference in Nottingham, under the theme "Learning Progression."
For too long, advocates for media education and exemplars of practice have confined themselves to single sectors: there is little or no dialogue between those teaching media in primary schools or as part of general education, and those teaching media in specialist courses in senior high school or in higher education. But learners' life experiences are continuous, and as educators we all need to consider the prior experiences of those we teach, and the pathways they may follow after we teach them. New research increasingly reveals unexpected levels of media understanding and expertise in younger learners, with radical implications for curriculum design at every level. And in an environment where media access and usage are continually changing, all educators need to investigate how this may affect learning and teaching.
The Media Education Association is the subject association for media teachers in England, and thus represents those engaged in the real day-to-day practice of teaching and learning about media. The Centre for the Study of Children, Youth and Media at the Institute of Education, London, is one of the UK's leading centres for research in this area: this year its major research project Developing Media Literacy: Towards a Model of Learning Progression will conclude and its key outcomes will be presented at MLC 2011.
Last year's conference was a huge success (see http://themea.org/2010/11/09/demo-post/); we intend this year's to be even better. We very much look forward to meeting you in Nottingham in November.
