Committee Biographies
Cary Bazalgette
Cary worked at the British Film Institute from 1979 to 2007, having previously been a teacher of English and filmmaking in London secondary schools. She has written and edited a number of classroom resources for media education and has published and spoken widely on this topic in the UK and around the world. She was Head of BFI Education from 1999-2006, and is now working as a freelance researcher, writer and consultant specializing in media literacy. She is Chair of the Media Literacy Association and a member of the European Commission's Media Literacy Experts' Group.
David Buckingham
David is Professor of Education at the Institute of Education, London University, and Director of the Centre for the Study of Children, Youth and Media. His research focuses on children's and young people's interactions with electronic media, and on media education. He has recently completed research projects on everyday uses of video production technology; the uses of digital media by migrant/refugee children across Europe; and young people's responses to sexual content in the media. He is currently working on two major projects, one on the role of the internet in promoting young people's civic participation, and the other on learning and progression in media education.
Kate Domaille
Kate worked as Programme Director and Secondary English course Leader at the University of Southampton from 2002-2010, having previously been a teacher of English and Media Studies in London secondary schools and sixth form colleges. She has written a number of classroom resources for media education for the English and Media Centre, Auteur and the BFI. She has resaerched and presented on the importance of teacher education for media learning and progression. She has served as a member of the executive on the Media Education Association and on the editorial board for the Media Education Research Journal. She is now working as a freelance researcher, writer and consultant in the field of media learning and in the wider area of quality assurance, course development and course improvement.
John Potter
John Potter is Programme Leader for the MA in Media, Culture and Communication at the London Knowledge Lab, part of the Institute of Education at the University of London. He is a member of the Centre for the Study of Children, Youth and Media directed by David Buckingham and is on the MEA Executive Committee. John's recent research has been focused on younger learners as media producers of moving image texts, animation and short digital video pieces. He has also worked with serving teachers and media students developing modules and research on blogging, including the uses of social software across learning contexts.
Before joining the IOE, John worked for a number of years in teacher education at Goldsmiths College and UEL. He has also worked as an advisory teacher and has taught throughout the age range in primary schools in East London. Further information is at www.lkl.ac.uk/people/potter.
